Boundless.org asked me to write an article about the ESV Study Bible. It's now online: Behold the Temple, briefly exploring the relationship between Jesus and the Temple. (It begins with the observation that Jesus never actually entered the Temple proper--despite most people thinking he did.)The article contains some illustrations of Jerusalem's Temple Mount that have not yet been posted online. You can see where Zechariah encountered the angel, where Jesus was dedicated, where Satan tempted Jesus to jump from the "pinnacle of the temple," where Jesus observed the widow putting her mite int... From the Crossway Blog:Mark Driscoll recently spoke on “Christ and the Media” at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota. The occasion was the 2008-09 Faith + Thought Lecture Series. In his message, Mark contends that technology and media can be either obstacles or opportunities for the gospel, depending on how they are used. He provides an overview of how Christians have used technology and the media throughout church history, shares examples of what Mars Hill Church is doing in this vein, and follows up with some Q & A. The entire audio runs about 1 hour and 26 minutes. You... [read more]

In my morning blogoskim I noticed a couple of posts that seem to fit well with each other.First, Denny Burk highlighted this section from Scot McKnight's CT article about Brian McLaren. McKnight has a deep appreciation for McLaren and his work, but also raises some concerns--the first of which is McLaren's lack of clarity and graciousness:Despite his many proposals in these last two books, McLaren would rather ask a question and create a conversation than propound a solution. This style is an attribute of a good teacher. Yet having said that, I want to voice the frustration of many: McLaren... [read more]

Joe Thorn interviews Ed Stetzer about church planting and the gospel in the suburban context. Here is one of their exchanges:What are some common mistakes churches in the suburbs make? I think there are probably several. First, they assume that nice shiny clean people have nice shiny clean lives. When you work in an urban context, you can sometimes see the sin and trouble with greater ease. It is better hidden in the suburbs. Thus, we think that people need sermons on how to improve their lives. They don’t. They need messages on how to be transformed by the gospel. Second, the suburbs are... [read more]

Peter Suderman reviews Bill Maher's new film, Religulous. An excerpt:For Maher, the problem with being both smart and funny is that the two often come into conflict; Religulous isn't a stupid movie by any means, and Maher shows himself in possession of a greater understanding of religion -- especially its historical particulars -- than most of those whom he encounters. Yet for all his bluster, he seems to lack confidence in the power of his own knowledge, for whenever smart and funny collide, funny wins out. That's not to say he lands no blows. Indeed, Maher employs a well honed rhetorical s... [read more]
