This is a pressing question for pastors today. Ultimately, there is only one thing to preach: the Word of God. We certainly cannot preach our own hobby-horses. We cannot preach anything but Christ crucified and raised from the dead. We cannot preach a health and wealth “gospel.” We cannot preach the newest fad. We preach the unchanging Word to a changing world, to use Harvey Conn’s helpful book title. However, there is greater specificity needed here. How do I preach the Word? What part of it should I preach? The answer to the first question is that expository preaching is... [read more]

…weighing in at just under 1,000 pages! I have never heard of these authors before, but Richard Gaffin commends it, and is glad that it is now in English, apparently for the first time. I intend to check it out. Posted in Books (reviews and recommendations)

The ESV Study Bible is ready to ship today from the WTS bookstore! And, seemingly coincidentally (wink, wink), a new economy shipping option is available for orders under $35 ($3 for USPS). Only the hardback version is under $35. Here are the various options: Hardback, Genuine Leather Black, Genuine Leather Burgundy, Tru-tone black, Tru-tone brown, Bonded leather black (um…why? when you can get the genuine leather for only $12 more?), Bonded leather burgundy (ditto), and Premium Calfskin (pricey, but definitely the most long-lasting choice). …And it’s outstanding. It is also extensive, as just volume 1 is well over 800 pages, and yet the writing is never obtuse or difficult. A clearly written commentary, very helpful for the layman or minister. Even scholars should not turn up their noses at it. Posted in Books (reviews and recommendations)

Following up on my post about commentaries, this post will give an assortment of good books for the laity to read. No doubt, there will be many books not listed here which are also excellent for the laity. I waive the point. This is just my list. By all means, though, leave comments as to what books you think are excellent for the beginning Christian. I will also try to limit the list to books that are good for mature laity as well as beginning Christians. I will split it up into the various areas of study for ease of reference. Furthermore, they will be listed in incremental difficulty fro... [read more]

I have received requests to post more books for the normal Christian who cannot read Hebrew and Greek (or Latin, for that matter!). So what I intend to do here is to publish the two or three best commentaries on each book of the Bible for laymen. My thoughts here are geared towards those (like elders) who might teach a Sunday School class, or a Bible study, and also those who simply want to dig deeper into the Word on their own. All books need to be read with discretion. I do not agree with everything in all these books. But I have sought to choose commentaries that will generally edify, an... [read more]

The author of this book was one of my professors at WTS, and is most likely the world’s expert on the doctrine of adoption (sorry, Dr. Beeke, it is not intended as a slight of your excellent book, which, I notice, makes use of Trumper’s thesis quite extensively). The doctrine of adoption, of course, plays a huge role in an orthodox response to the sonship movement. This makes Dr. Trumper extremely well-qualified to write this book. A book that goes against culture, especially feminism, is always a cause for celebration. The author has a blog, entitled Radical Womanhood, that is well worth checking out. Posted in Books (reviews and recommendations), Women

This book well deserves to be reprinted, and Christian Focus is to be commended for so doing. It combines a Puritan view of the Sabbath with extremely practical help on how to make it work, even with small children! I commend it to all readers. I believe that this book is so important that I am going to have to review each chapter by itself. I will seek to obtain a balance in whetting people’s appetites for more (and thus not giving everything away, making purchase of the book superfluous), and yet giving people an idea of what questions and issues the book addresses, so that people can have an idea of whether the book would interest them. The introduction is by Gary Johnson. As we have come to expect from him, the writing style is punchy, with no holds barred, and yet scholarly throughout, which makes the jabs all the more ...
