Mohler: Christianity and Mormonism are ‘incompatible’

Al Mohler wrote the following words in response to Mormon Orson Scott Card at Beliefnet. Read the entire response here. Here is an excerpt:

I appreciate Orson Scott Card’s response to my first entry, and his rather lengthy essay can serve to move the discussion along.

The first matter of concern is to clarify the question. When I asked, “Are Mormons ‘Christians’ as defined by traditional Christian orthodoxy?,” I was stating the question exactly as it was put to me. The words “as defined by traditional Christian orthodoxy” were part of my assignment, not my imposition.

At the same time, I was glad the question was asked in this manner, for it is the only way I can provide an answer that matters. The question could surely be asked in other ways and we could attempt to define Christianity in terms of sociology, phenomenology, the history of religions, or any number of other disciplines. In any of these cases, someone with specific training in these fields should provide the argument.

The question could simply refer to common opinion – do people on the street believe that Mormonism is Christianity? But then the matter would be in better hands among the pollsters.

In any event, the question was framed theologically, and it was framed by Beliefnet in terms of “traditional Christian orthodoxy.” With the question structured that way, the answer is clear and unassailable – Mormonism is not Christianity. When the question is framed this way, Mr. Card and I actually agree, as his essay makes clear.

In his words, “I am also happy to agree with him that when one compares our understanding of the nature of God and Christ, we categorically disagree with almost every statement in the “historic creeds and doctrinal affirmations” he refers to.”

Mr. Card would prefer that the question be put differently. I understand his concern, and if I were a Mormon I would share that concern and would try to define Christianity in some way other than traditional Christian orthodoxy. The reason is simple – traditional Christian orthodoxy and Mormon theology are utterly incompatible.

What Could Be Worse At A Time Like This?

In his March 28th column at Al Mohler.com Dr. Mohler writes, “Former President Jimmy Carter is at it once again. In a recent interview with Beliefnet.com, Mr. Carter stated once again his belief that there is salvation outside of faith in Christ… What could be worse than getting the Gospel wrong?” First of all; nothing. Perhaps we may still recall a little thing called the Protestant Reformation which was about this vital issue - the heart of the Gospel itself.

But what about a man like Dr. Al Mohler, whom the Lord Himself has placed in such a prominent position within the Southern Baptist Convention? The SBC is allegedly the largest “Protestant” group in the country, and yet Dr. Mohler can’t even write me privately–let alone saying anything publicly–while SBC President Dr. Frank Page encourages his “Jesus Convention” to climb in bed with the decidedly anti-Reformation and highly ecumenical Emergent Church.

It appears Dr. Mohler’s able to take on sitting ducks like Jimmy Carter but while Ed Young, Jr. brings Oneness Pentecostal heretic and Word Faith money changer T.D. Jakes into a very prominent SBC church, again we hear nothing but speculation about alleged gay babies. Young has shown clips of Jakes’ preaching at his foolish C3 conferences during regular worship at Fellowship Church for the second year in a row. And not only that but Ed Young has also shared the pulpit in Jakes’ Potter’s House as well.

Perhaps Dr. Mohler might listen to his own words from the back of my copy of Dr. John MacArthur’s most important book, The Truth War, “he is armed with the courage to confront this age with a bold defense of truth…” How about you Dr. Mohler? Will you follow the example of your friend and find the courage to confront this growing Emergent cult of new liberal theology in our own SBC? And will you please speak out against Ed Young sharing the pulpit with T.D. Jakes, a man who believes in another god and another Jesus.

At Apprising Ministries I offer this clip from God Tube of Dr. John MacArthur, who not only exhorts us on to be godly men, but he clearly demonstrates by example how one confronts error head on as well.

Mohler on Rights

We've been speaking of our rights. This week, Al Mohler took on the subject with a slightly different slant:
Harvard law professor Mary Ann Glendon warned years ago that a contagion of "rights talk" was ruining our ability to conduct a serious moral discussion. When every major issue is reduced to "rights," the moral considerations go into a melt-down. When rights inevitably conflict and collide, there is no way to resolve the problem.
Mohler goes on to describe one unexpected and tragic consequence that the cherished "right" of "choice" has brought about: women's rights champions have made it possible for millions of baby girls to be aborted because of their gender. And so a "right" supposedly meant to empower women is actually resulting in the slaughter of women. Our moral choices have to be informed by more than our rights. You can read the full article at Dr. Mohler's blog.

Overheard at the Shepherds’ Conference today…

All liberal theology is an attempt to rescue Christianity from the God of the Bible (Al Mohler)

Al Mohler reads an average of 7-10 books per week and sleeps an average of 4-5 hours per night. If you are scoring at home that is an average of about 1800 hours of sleep and 350 books per year.

A perfect day for Steve Lawson would be to play a round of golf with his sons, preach a sermon, kiss his wife and then to die and go to heaven. Not sure on the order on this one.

Your job is to tar the ark! Prepare the people for the upcoming rain of Gods judgment! Mark Dever to pastors

John MacArthur advised Mark Dever that Lloyd Jones and John Murray believed in a future for Israel. Dever also suggested that Richard Sibbes be added to Macs list. MacArthur also intimated that Spurgeon would be onboard as well. (MacArthur is recruiting an army of premillennial calvinists (dead or alive) who believe in a future for the Nation of Israel)

Al Mohler said that the Shepherds Conference has more wagging tails than any place on the planet. Apparently this is a phrase for Southerners, cause as a Yankee it is lost on me. Apparently it has something to do with us be happy Gentiles?

Deconstruct false hopesliberate your people from lies by preaching the truthServe your people by emancipating them from error! Mark Dever

Devers message was off the charts. He walked us through Daniel (without touching chapters 7-9 :/). It was awesome. I dont have time to unpack it; read Challies and get the audio for yourself or your pastorit is a must hear!

On my way to hear John give the final message of the conference. Rumor is that it is part two of the eschatology message.

(I have had virtually no time to respond to comments, although I want to, perhaps tomorrow? We do not have WiFi in the hotel…)
